About Monica
Monica Melgar was born in Chicago, Illinois but was raised in both the U.S. and Mexico. She has been living in the Houston area for 5 years. She is a self-taught artist that has developed her painting technique from her doodling style that began in high school. Her subject matter is mostly abstract with the goal of giving the viewer a glimpse into her subconscious by creating layers of tiny brushstrokes in what she calls “pointillism with a twist”.
Lately her paintings are inspired by her constant doodling with a variety of gel, colored ink and metallic pens all done freehand without the use of any tools. Although many of them start off as sketches they turn into works on paper ready for purchase.
In addition to painting and drawing she has explored techniques to create plastic sculptures created with up-cycled PET plastic. By arranging and attaching the heated plastic shapes she creates forms that mimic fire, sea creatures and flowers. Her paintings and plastic sculptures have been shown in solo exhibitions and group shows throughout the Houston area. Her works belong to many private collections in the U.S. and Mexico.
