About my work
My artwork is created in a meditative state in which I disconnect the ego and allow the process to unfold in the present moment. My works are created with a freehand style of line work that emerges organically one line at a time.
Each piece begins with a single line, that slowly starts to set the tone by informing the next line and the next and so on and so on. In this space, I release control and allow for the composition to be guided by a dialogue between instinct and intuition. The lines I create are spontaneous yet deliberate, weaving together a visual language that is personal but universal at the same time. Each artwork evolves organically, and instead of each decision feeling like a conscious choice it is more like a discovery.
This approach is a practice in vulnerability and release. As a way to quiet the mind and channel a sense of flow, I connect to a space of stillness and wonder. Through this practice, I hope to create a space for the viewer to experience a moment of pure expression, free from external influence, and invite them to connect with more instinctive and emotional layers of their own perception. Each painting serves as a record of presence, a celebration of the unplanned and imperfect. It is an invitation to embrace the beauty of spontaneity and to find meaning in the act of creation itself.
About Monica
Houston based visual artist, Monica Melgar, has been pursuing her professional art career for the past 13 years. Although she studied Graphic Communication at the Art Institute of Houston, her painting skills are self taught. It all started from her constant doodling in high school that she used to relax her stressed mind.
During her childhood her parents moved back and forth between Mexico and the U.S. and as a result, her artistic expressions are influenced by the vivid colors and delicate patterns found in Mexican artisanry. Her painting style has now changed from tiny dashes to fine linework that create abstract images that sometimes take on a accidental form of a flower or a sea creature.
In addition to painting, she has explored various applications in the use of up-cylced PET plastic from soda bottles. By cutting, heating, fusing the plastic she creates sculptures that mimic glass. She’s made a vessel that started off as a heart, a Wizard of Oz themed tornado, an installation that seemed as if it moved, and recently a hanging piece that seems to float.
Her paintings and plastic sculptures have been shown in solo exhibitions and group shows throughout the Houston area and recently in Austin. Her works belong to many private collections in the U.S. and Mexico.
LIVE Painting Events
Live Painting
I’ve been told that watching me paint can be mesmerizing. I’ve been told people could watch me for hours. I’ve been told it's unbelievable! Well I don’t know about that last one but I do get a kick out of painting in front of people.
I am now offering Live Painting for events so that your guests can experience my art in the making. My services include a prepped piece of artwork that will be completed in front of your guests during the event. Your guests can either bid for the original artwork to raise funds for a charity or it can be purchased for a set price.
I’m available for corporate events, charity galas, fundraisers, weddings, birthdays and pretty much any kind of celebration. Let’s set up a meeting so we can discuss the details of your event and make art one of the highlights! You can contact me via email at monica@monicamelgarart.com
